On the Feast of Christ the King, Sunday, October 28, St. Joseph Oratory gratefully welcomed His Grace, the Most Reverend Archbishop Allen H. Vigneron, for the conferral of the Sacrament of Confirmation on youth and adults. The Archbishop beautifully reminded the Confirmandi that they are soldiers of Christ, on a mission to be about the work of Jesus Christ. He also encouraged all those present to be renewed in the graces of their Baptism and Confirmation. Prior to the ceremony, the Archbishop enjoyed time greeting the Confirmandi, and viewing firsthand the wonderful progress on the steeple restoration accomplished during the first year of the Oratory's Historic Renewal campaign.

Following the Confirmations, U.S. Provincial Superior Canon Matthew Talarico offered the Solemn High Mass for Christ the King, assisted by Canon Michael Stein and Canon Adrian Sequeira. The St. Joseph Cappella sang Palestrina's Missa Aeterna Christi Munera. Parishioners, friends, and family then gathered in the Social Hall for an uplifting Reception for the Confirmandi. Veni, Creator Spiritus!

The handsome grounds of Our Lady of the Lake University were the setting for a recent pilgrimage sponsored by the Institute of Christ the King.  Members of St. Mary Oratory in Rockford, along with many friends from the Rockford area boarded a bus headed towards Mundelein, Illinois on Thursday, November 8, 2018.  Our 60 Participants were encouraged to offer their pilgrimage and prayers that day for the repose of the souls of their departed Family Members.  Holy Mass at the University conference center chapel, Several rosaries and a litany to Our Lady  were all offered during the day for this intention.  in addition, our guests were able to tour the magnificent Chapel, library and lakefront terraces adorning the seminary grounds, sights sure to impress any visitor!  Lunch was had at the nearby Marytown Shrine where Brother Donald gave an edifying talk about St. Maximilian Kolbe, as well as showed our pilgrims the museum dedicated to this great Saint’s life.  The Community at St. Mary Oratory looks forwards to arranging another pilgrimage in the future.

At the gracious invitation of His Excellency David Zubik, Bishop of Pittsburgh, on October 15, 2018, the Institute of Christ the King Sovereign Priest assumed responsibility for the pastoral care of the Latin Mass community which has been operating under the direction of the diocese for nearly 30 years.

Canon William Avis, who previously served in the Institute’s apostolates in St. Louis, Kansas City, Oakland and Tucson, was appointed administrator of the quasi-parish, and will be assisted by his vicar, Canon John O’Connor, formerly assigned to the Institute’s apostolate in Limerick, Ireland.

To inaugurate the Institute’s care of the parish, Canon Matthew Talarico, US Provincial Superior of the Institute, and himself a native of Pittsburgh, offered a Solemn High Mass and preached on Sunday, October 21, with Canons Avis and O’Connor serving as deacon and subdeacon. Mass was followed by a reception where the Canons were glad to meet many of their new parishioners, who provided them with a very warm and hospitable welcome.

The Superiors and Canons of the Institute of Christ the King Sovereign Priest are most grateful to Bishop Zubik for the invitation to serve in the Diocese of Pittsburgh, and look forward to providing for the pastoral care of this new apostolate in the future.

The Sacrament of Confession is now available 30 minutes prior to all Masses, as well as during the Sunday Masses.

There are a number of ways in which members of the parish place their talents at the service of God and the Church, such as the Pueri Cantorum children’s choir, the Gradus Cantorum choir for adolescents and young adults, and the Schola Cantorum adult choir, the service of the sanctuary as an altar boy, or by deepening one’s faith at catechism (currently offered for children in grades K-12 at St. Ambrose Church between the 8am and 11am Masses on Sunday morning).

Other new and exciting activities will be forthcoming under the direction of the Canons of the Institute of Christ the King in the near future.

Until the permanent future location is chosen for the apostolate, Masses will continue to be offered at St. Boniface Church (Holy Wisdom Parish), 2208 East Street, Pittsburgh, PA 15212, while the Canons are currently in residence at the rectory of Risen Lord Parish.

At the gracious invitation of His Excellency, the Most Reverend Donald J. Hying, Bishop of the Diocese of Gary, Indiana, the Institute of Christ the King Sovereign Priest will begin a new apostolate at St. Joseph Parish in Hammond, Indiana, starting in mid-November. The Institute will help to care for the needs of the growing number of faithful in northwestern Indiana who wish to worship according to the Extraordinary Form of the Roman Rite in the Diocese of Gary and who desire the advantages, both sacramental and pastoral, of such a parish community. His Excellency, Bishop Hying has proposed the iconic and historical church of St. Joseph in Hammond, Indiana as the new home of the Institute’s new apostolate to the Extraordinary Form.

After consulting with the pastor, Fr. Richard Orlinski and the parish community, the Institute will begin its mission in the diocese of Gary on November 11th with a Solemn High Mass at St. Joseph’s Church in Hammond at 11:00am. The Mass will be celebrated by the Provincial Superior, the Rev. Canon Matthew Talarico.

Father Richard Orlinski remains Pastor of St. Joseph’s at the present time. Holy Mass will continue to be celebrated in the Ordinary Form in English on Saturdays at 4:30pm and on Sundays at 9:00am.

The Institute is nominating Canon Glenn Gardner to be appointed by Bishop Hying as rector of the new apostolate at Saint Joseph’s and eventually parish administrator at a later time. Canon Gardner will be available to care for everyone’s spiritual needs. Thus, he will soon be residing in the St. Joseph rectory.

Beginning Sunday, November 11, Holy Mass in the Extraordinary Form will be offered on Sundays at 11:00 a.m. Daily mass will be offered in the church at 8:00 a.m. Monday through Thursday, as well on Saturday morning. Friday Mass will be offered at 6:00 p.m. Confessions will be available daily 30 minutes before each Mass. Beginning in January, additional Masses and devotions will be added according to pastoral need.

On the First Sunday of Advent, December 2, His Excellency, Bishop Hying will visit Saint Joseph’s. Adoration of the Most Blessed Sacrament will begin at 11:00am ending with Benediction. At 12:00pm, Solemn High Mass in the Extraordinary Form will be celebrated by the Institute’s provincial superior, Canon Matthew Talarico. Bishop Hying will offer the homily. A light reception will follow. Everyone is welcome!

The Institute of Christ the King Sovereign Priest would like to extend its heartfelt thanks to Bishop Hying, Fr. Orlinksi, the pastor of St. Joseph parish and the whole parish community for the opportunity to serve the Church in northwestern Indiana and to call the beautiful St. Joseph’s church our new home. Together let us all pray to St. Joseph for his help and guidance.

Saturday, October 27th, marked a milestone for Old Saint Patrick Oratory in Kansas City, Missouri. Ten years have passed since the renovation of the church was completed and the church was consecrated. The Most Reverend James Vann Johnston, Bishop of Kansas City-St. Joseph, joined us for a Solemn Mass of Thanksgiving celebrated by the Institute's provincial superior, Canon Matthew Talarico. Bishop Johnston preached at the Mass and then presided at the Te Deum and Benediction. After Mass, our guests joined us for a festive reception under a marquee in the church garden in the bishop's honor.

Designed by architect Asa Beebe Cross and built in 1875, Old Saint Patrick’s is the oldest Catholic church in Kansas City. The first Mass was celebrated at Christmas of that year, though work continued until 1881. Following stylistic alterations in the late 1960s, an extensive renovation in harmony with the classical revival style of the church was completed in 2008 under the direction of Mr. William Heyer, who the Institute has now also asked to design its National Shrine of Christ the King. Incorporating three beautiful altars from a closed church in Boston, much of the restoration work was lovingly accomplished with the “sweat and blood” of local volunteers from the congregation. Bishop Finn solemnly consecrated the church on October 25th 2008.

10 years have gone by since the founding of our beloved St. Gianna's Oratory here in Tucson with countless graces conferred on souls through the Sacraments conferred in the Extraordinary Form. This 10th anniversary was doubly marked by the recent Confirmations conferred by Bishop Emeritus Gerald Kicanas on Saturday, October 6 and by the first visit of our recently appointed bishop of Tucson, His Excellency, Edward Weisenburger on Sunday, the 7th of October.

On October 6, following his sermon on the importance of living and witnessing our holy faith, Bishop Kicanas celebrated a pontifical Low Mass.  He was then received by many faithful in the parish hall with deep gratitude for welcoming the Institute 10 years ago and for conferring on many young adults the Sacrament of Confirmation once again.

Then on Sunday, as the external solemnity of Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary, Bishop Weisenburger assisted at a beautiful Solemn High Mass, celebrated by Canon Talarico and assisted by Canons Avis and Fehrenbacher.  His Excellency preached on the “Fiat” we all must make like our Lady in following God's will by responding generously and humbly.  Bishop Weisenburger was also warmly received in the social hall as we gathered to welcome him to St. Gianna Oratory.  During the reception, our children's choir, under the direction of Abbe Juneau, beautifully sang several pieces to honor our Blessed Mother in this month of the Holy Rosary.

May God be blessed for spiritually nourishing our small “miracle in the desert” (as Cardinal Burke fondly calls the Oratory).

Ad multos annos!

St. Joseph Oktoberfest on Sunday, September 23, 2018, was an exciting and joyful cultural festival at St. Joseph Oratory in Detroit.  Inside the church was a Solemn High Orchestral Mass at 11:00 am, two church tours, a Classical Concert, and Vespers.  The festivities outside in beautiful weather ran from 12:30 pm to 8:30 pm.  Entertainment under the big tent included the Bavarian band Siasswasser Tanzlmusi, Bavarian dancers G.T.E.V. Edelweiss Detroit, the second annual Steinholding Contest and presentation of the Steinly Cup by Canon Michael Stein to the winners of the Women's and Men's Divisions, Notre Dame Preparatory Jazz Band, and Billy & Fast Forward Entertainment.  Visitors also enjoyed a full German dinner and grill station, Bavarian beer and a local Oktoberfest beer, fowling and corn hole, children's activities and face painting, Silent Auction, Raffle, Attic Treasures, German clothing, parish gifts including etched steeple slate, and local vendors.  It was wonderful to share this time of prayer and cultural recreation with so many people of all ages, including many first-time visitors, neighbors, long-time supporters, and seminarians, priests, and religious.  St. Joseph Oratory is grateful to all the sponsors and volunteers who made the Oktoberfest possible and contributed to the Historic Renewal of the Oratory campus.  Deo gratias!

Ten years ago, the Institute of Christ the King received the canonical status of Pontifical Right by the decree entitled "Saeculorum Rex" from Benedict XVI.  Ten years later, Almight God has blessed the Institute with many new canons.  Deo gratis!

Each year, during the last week of August, all of the canons of the Institute are invited back to our Motherhouse in Gricigliano, where they studied as seminarians, by the Prior General for a week-long “family reunion” known as the General Chapter.  The canons are able to visit with their confreres from all over the world, some of whom they have not seen for over a year.  They are able to grow more closely as a family, dining together, learning together, and of course, praying together through the beauty of the Sacred Liturgy.  Refreshed by a week of fraternal charity, the priests of the Institute are then sent back out into the world, ready for another year of service to our Holy Mother Church for the salvation of souls.  Deo gratias!

Every other year, the Bishop of Oakland graciously comes to confirm the candidates prepared by the Institute for this very important Sacrament of Holy Mother Church.  It is always a great occasion to foster the unity of the apostolates on the West Coast.  The faithful of the Institute’s Oratory of the Immaculate Heart of Mary in San Jose, California have the opportunity to join those of Saint Margaret Mary in Oakland.  This year, 43 well-prepared candidates for Confirmation were presented to his Excellency, Bishop Michael Barber, who, after administering the Sacrament of Confirmation, would assist pontifically at the throne during the Solemn High Mass that would follow.

Canon Ueda , rector of the oratory, celebrated the Solemn Mass.  Canon Avis kindly came from Tucson, Arizona to be the Master of Ceremonies, bringing his expertise for the perfection of the Divine Liturgy.  Canon Meney assisted as Deacon, and clerical oblate, Abbé Kevin Kerscher, served as Subdeacon for the Solemn High Mass.

A special mention to the wonderful work of the new flower team!  The altar was beautifully adorned for the external solemnity of the Assumption of Our Lady.  Additionally, a special thanks is due to Jay Balza for his diligence in capturing the life of the Liturgy on camera for us all to see.

On August 2, a fine Thursday morning in St. Louis, the pealing church bells at 10:00 am signaled the beginning of the Rite of Ordination at St. Francis de Sales Oratory. His Eminence, Raymond Leo Cardinal Burke, Cardinal Patronus of the Sovereign Military Order of Malta, was about to ordain four more priests for Holy Mother Church, and one subdeacon. All Americans, the ordinandi for the priesthood were Deacon Peter Heidenreich, Deacon Benjamin Norman, Deacon Matthew Weaver, and Deacon Luke Zignego. Abbé Alex Barga, a clerical oblate of the Institute, would also be ordained a subdeacon by His Eminence on this occasion.

Fittingly, this being the first Thursday of the month, the Mass celebrated would be the votive Mass of Jesus Christ Eternal High Priest. Later in his homily, the Cardinal would refer passionately to Our Lord as Sovereign Priest, inviting the ordinandi to offer the Holy Sacrifice with him in this Ordination Mass.

The ceremony began with a majestic entrance into the beautiful, 110-year-old church of St. Francis de Sales Oratory. As the church’s organ voiced the glorious concertos of Vivaldi and Johann Sebastian Bach, the ordinandi for the priesthood and for the subdiaconate processed into the church, each appropriately vested for his order, and carrying a lit candle in his right hand. The solemnity of the occasion was emphasized by the large number of clergy in attendance, including seminarians, priests, canons, superiors of the Institute, monsignors, and two Archbishops, His Excellency Salvatore Cordileone of San Francisco and His Excellency Timothy P. Broglio of the US Military Services. The music crescendoed at the entrance of His Eminence, Cardinal Burke, whose blessing of the faithful swelled the hearts of all in the packed church as he processed solemnly down the nave.

Graces emanated, flowed, filled, and lifted up the same hearts and minds in the hours that followed. The unity, catholicity, and lineage through the apostles to Jesus Christ, the Eternal High Priest, was sweetly yet strongly perceptible in the Church’s Sacred Liturgy; the four hours passed as if only one had.

After Mass, the Cardinal was the first to receive the First Blessings from the newly ordained priests, kissing the same hands he had anointed with Sacred Oil when he bestowed upon them the power to offer Sacrifice to God and to celebrate Mass for the living and the dead.

The faithful waited in long lines for their priestly blessings by the new canons. The new bond between the new priest and the flock was beautiful to witness as the each faithful reciprocated by taking a prayer card from each new priest, assenting to remember him in prayer.

On Friday morning, graces continued to pour forth from the altar as each new canon celebrated Holy Mass for the first time, and after the four First Masses had been celebrated, a solemn Te Deum was sung in thanksgiving to Almighty God for His magnanimous Providence.

The members of the Institute extend their heart-felt gratitude to Cardinal Burke for his continued paternal affection and indefatigable generosity in the service of Holy Mother Church, providing her with four new priests for eternity.  Additionally, they wish to express their most sincere thanks to His Excellency, Robert J. Carlson for his permission and blessing to have this glorious ceremony in the Archdiocese of St. Louis.
